Relational Identity

My project is a representation of the growth of an individual. The piece is constructed out of 1 x 10 pine wood, ¾ wide threaded rod, washers, and nuts. There are 12 photographs, which I took using a film camera and developed in my college’s dark room. The boxes are about 9.5 x 9.25 expect for the base which is 9.5 x 18.5.

The photographs are of my friend, her sister, mother, and my grandmother. The piece is a portrayal of a woman growing from a child, teenager, mother, and grandmother. The images can be mixed together by the spinning of the boxes to express that though one is growing older the memories and experiences of the past mold one’s character and personality.

The grandmother will possess qualities and characteristics of the joyful and bubbly little girl of the past. An individual remains the same person form childhood through old age. Her mind and body are transformed through the tribulations and enchanting moments she encounters in her journey through life.
